Morning Sessions Tentative*
Below is a general summary of what topics and experiences you can expect to see at the Integrative Health Summit! Several topics are meant for either high schoolers or current college students, but we welcome students to attend any session of interest.
College Admissions 101
Are you wondering how many schools to apply to and how to put together that perfect list of schools? Do you know how to prioritize what you are looking for? Come hear from UAB's Director of Undergraduate Admissions to help determine what college is best for you and how to improve your chances of acceptance.
Medical School Admissions 101
Learn about what it takes to get into medical school directly from the source. This session will answer questions about medical schools are looking for in an applicant, common misconceptions about minority applicants, the interview process, how you can develop your application, and more.
School of Health Professions 101
Learn about the School of Professions, what careers fall under this school, and what programs they have to offer. This session will answer questions about what health profession programs are looking for in an applicant, common misconceptions about minority applicants, the interview process, and more.
Dentistry 101
Are you interested in applying to dental school or learning more about the exciting and diverse field of dentistry? Come hear from a dental student and a renowned dentist about the admissions process, their journey in dentistry, and more!
Pharmacy 101
Learn about the School of Pharmacy from current students from Samford University McWhorter School of Pharmacy! They will discuss the successful applicant, talk about a day in the life of a pharmacy student, and answer your burning questions about the field.
Optometry 101
A chance to hear about the UAB Optometry program! Discussion on what optometry is, what makes this field special, school requirements, personal experiences, and how to become a competitive applicant!
Public Health 101
Learn about public health and its role in medicine! This session will discuss how a career and background in public health, through a MPH, can impact community health and strengthen your application and future work as a clinician.
Occupational Therapy 101
Hear from a current occupational therapist about what occupational therapy consists of. And learn about the requirements and needs an OT candidate must acquire prior to applying.
Parents Meeting
New to IHS this year, we welcome parents to sit in on a conversation. Discussing ways to support their STEM students which can help their students on their journey in medicine.
Hands-On Workshops
Below is a general summary of what types of clinical skills experiences you can participate in during the after, at the Integrative Health Summit!
Suturing Workshop
During this workshop, you will receive information and instructions on the different techniques of suturing and then be allowed to perform your own sutures! The presenters will be there throughout the workshop to help and answer questions. At the end, students will have the opportunity to ask questions to a panelists of surgeons and current medical students going into surgery about their journey. All lead by the Association of Women Surgeons.
Point of Care Ultrasound Workshop
During this workshop, you will discuss and review ultrasound images and techniques. You will learn from Family Medicine physicians about what anatomical parts can be captured with POCUS technology and how this technology is changing healthcare today.
Come Roll With Me
Come have a hands on experience with different techniques and tools Occuptional Therapist use on the day to day for their patients.
Pulse Finders Workshop
Come learn about CPR, first-aid, AED placement, and choking maneuvers in this interactive, hands-on session! Multiple volunteers will be present to help and answer questions. Hear about the exciting field of nursing and the speaker’s own personal journey with medicine and more!
